Here is the third edition of our workshop for young researchers, who will be gathered from 11th to 13th September 2017 in Florence discussing their topics together with renowned Italian and foreign scholars. With ‘Reforming Religions in the Modern World (XVIth-XVIIIth centuries)’, scientifically coordinated by Massimo Carlo Giannini and Maurizio Sangalli, starting from the Lutheran anniversary of this year, the aim of our Institute is to widen the attention also to the reforming initiatives among Judaism and Islam, together with the different ways of Christianity, encouraging interesting comparisons. This year, the workshop is financially supported also by the Italian Jewish Communities Union, the Waldensian Church of Florence and the Protestant Cultural Centre ‘Pietro Martire Vermigli’. We are going to close our first semester of activities with the fourth appointment of our series ‘Religions: local and global scenarios’: next Thursday 13th July 2017, in our headquarters in Piazza di San Firenze in Florence, prof. Tabona Shoko, from Zimbabwe University in Harare, who is in town with the project of the ‘Florence Short Term Fellowships’, financially supported by the Fondazione Cassa di risparmio di Firenze, will talk about christianity, traditional African religions and human rights in his country, martyrized by the inter-ethnic conflicts as it was. Together with him, Mariella Abruzzo, from the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Italy, a young scholar who has studied the women condition in Zimbabwe, both chaired by the journalist Michele Brancale. Third appointment with our series ‘Religions: local and global scenarios’: our Institute, in collaboration with the Jewish Community of Florence, next Tuesday 20th June 2017, at the Florentine Synagogue, will organize a lecture of prof. James W. Nelson Novoa, from the University of Ottawa, who is in town with the project of the ‘Florence Short Term Fellowships’, financially supported by the Fondazione Cassa di risparmio di Firenze. Chaired by chief rabbi Joseph Levi, prof. Novoa will discuss about the Jewish Diaspora from Spain and Portugal in the early modern centuries. Download here the program for more details.

Next Wednesday June 14th, at 5 pm, in the Salone Multimediale of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, our Institute, in collaboration with the Provincia romana di santa Caterina da Siena and other Dominicans institutions, will organize the launch of the book of our vice-president Massimo Carlo Giannini ‘I domenicani’, il Mulino, Bononia 2016. After ‘Italy and Religions’, here is the second appointment with our series ‘Religions: local and global scenarios’: next Thursday 25th May at 6 pm, in the San Firenze room of our Institute, prof. Roberto Di Stefano, from La Pampa University in Argentina, who is in town with the project of the ‘Florence Short Term Fellowships’, financially supported by the Fondazione Cassa di risparmio di Firenze, will give a lecture on “Religion and Politics in Argentina: some particular aspects in the history of the Church of pope Bergoglio”, in a dialogue with the Director of Toscana Oggi Andrea Fagioli. Church and politics, immigration, Peronism will be some of the topics of the lecture, in order to better understand the context in which Jorge Mario Bergoglio spent most part of his life. Next Wednesday 3rd May 2017, at 6 pm, in our Institute headquarters, two renowned scholars in socio-religious and theological studies, Paolo Naso and Brunetto Salvarani, will discuss about the numbers and the personalities of the religious confessions existing today in Italy, about pluralism and religious freedom and about the perspectives of the interreligious and intercultural dialogue, based on their ‘Reports on religions’. The Sangalli Istitute is this year partner of the Middle East Now 2017, the Festival of cinema and contemporary culture on the Middle East, which will take place in Florence from 4th to 9th April 2017, with an intense and particularly interesting program of movies and public talks. Ferial Mouhanna, who is a sociologist at Damascus University in Syria and member of the scientific committee of the new series of book of our Institute, will participate on Saturday 8th April, 7.30 pm, at the Cinema La Compagnia of Florence, to the launch of the last book of Alberto Negri (Il Sole 24 Ore), ‘Il musulmano errante. Storia degli alauiti e dei misteri del Medio Oriente’ (‘The errant Muslim. History of Alaouites and the mysteries of the Middle East’), Rosenberg & Selliers 2017; and to the talk on Sunday 9th April, same place, 11 am, ‘Toward a new clash of civilizations? The Middle Eastern chaos face to the Trump tsunami’.

The Sangalli Institute is pleased to announce a series of conferences on ‘Women and veils among cultures and religions’: the first debate will take place next Thursday 30th March at 5.30 pm in our headquarters. Maria Giuseppina Muzzarelli and Anna Vanzan will discuss upon the tradition of the veil in Middle Ages and Early Modern Western Europe and in the contemporary Middle Eastern area, according to their books ‘A capo coperto.
